Ducks Unlimited – Get Bleak | Jangle Pop / Indie Pop / C86 | BBI-011
Jangle-pop conservationists Ducks Unlimited flashback to the wiry guitars, snappy clothes and book smarts of groups like The Go-Betweens and The Verlaines.
The fabulously named Toronto-based quartet, formed around singer Tom Mcgreevy, have already shared stages with The Goon Sax, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and Weyes Blood. Their first singles produced by Josh Korody (Weaves, Fucked Up) and Shehzaad Jiwani (Grays) present Canadians as the new natural heirs of The Go-Betweens, The Chills and The Verlaines.
Get Bleak is their first 7" EP—the record that should soon be making a name for themselves among the elite of international jangle-pop. It somehow manages to seamlessly combine the slightly edgy, cool distance of late 80's Flying Nun Records bands with the modern day indie chic of second generation Go-Betweens bands like The Goon Sax, with a bounce and energy that hints at the Brooklyn scene.
You're going to immediately fall in love with this band.
PRESS:
"In less capable hands, the effort to bring the bouncy aesthetic of bands like the Field Mice and Blueboy into the 21st century could have been twee and derivative, but these songs manage to sound modern... Ducks Unlimited understand that dancing through misery is healthier than dancing around it."
— Pitchfork
"Jangly indie-pop at its finest... 'Get Bleak' echoes the jangly glory days of Sarah Records and brings to mind the likes of Belle & Sebastian and Johnny Marr."
— NME
"There's a reason the Toronto group has cut through on the first try—and you can quickly find out why by hitting play on the title track, which will jangle its way straight into your life."
— The AV Club
"Inspired by everything from Postcard Records to Flying Nun, there's kind of a rebellious anti-machismo in their music... an indie pop flaneur that recalls elements of C86 or Sarah Records."
— Clash
"The outfit lace peppy-paced songwriting with infectious jangle-pop punch; Johnny Marr-esque guitar hooks bubbling in a breezy, agile formula."
— Line Of Best Fit
"A cracking slice of strummy goodness."
— Brooklyn Vegan
"A jaunty slice of C86 indie-pop."
— Paste Magazine
